"Why?"
"It's hard for me to imagine what it's all like now. I wasn't here for the funeral I didn't go through all that. I guess part of coming back is that I'm trying in some way to help you shoulder some of the pain."
"It's a little late for that. What's done is done. You haven't been a part"
"Do you know a better place to start?" Charlie pushed.
Theodore was silent.
"Look, Ted, I'm trying. I'm desperate. I have to do this. I can't continue to let this go on. I even brought something for Father. It's something I brought back from overseas. Let me do this one thing. It's important to me."
The appeal was working. Charlie could see the doubt beginning to fade from his brother's face. The harsh gray eyes, even after all these years, were still out of concert with his ruddy complexion, but even as they spoke, the harshness softened. Slowly, word by word, the practiced contriteness, the contrived humility, the persistent pleas for forgiveness were beginning to erode the wall of his brother's suspicion and doubt. Peggy was right; he should have been an actor. He was a master at what he was doing. He was erasing time, ten years of doubt and distrust. I'm reeling you in, Teddy boy.
